How to Sew Lace-Up Cards

Lace-up cards -- colorful designs on thin cardboard with hole punches around the pictures -- provide an enjoyable way for children to learn fine motor skills. Children may have a keen interest in the process of sewing, especially if other people in the home sew. Provide this engaging and educational activity for children and show them how to sew lace-up cards to develop basic dexterity.

Things You'll Need

  • Lace-up cards (homemade or ready-made)
  • Colorful round shoestrings (at least 24 inches long)

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a hole to start the stitching. Instruct kids to insert the end of the shoestring into this hole from the bottom of the lace-up card. Show the children how to pull the shoestring through the hole until about 2 inches to 3 inches of lace remains at the back of the card. Secure the tail of shoestring by holding the lace-up card and the tail with your "non-lacing" hand.

    • 2

Stitch running stitches along the lace-up card by inserting the end of the shoestring back down through the next hole in the card. Pull the shoestring all the way through to make a stitch. Continue the running stitches by inserting the end of the shoestring back up through the next hole and stitching in this fashion all the way around the card.

Stitch whipstitches along the lace up card by inserting the end of the shoestring back up through the next hole from the underside of the card again. Pull the shoestring all the way through to make a stitch that covers the edge of the lace-up card. Continue the whipstitches by always inserting the end of the shoestring up from the bottom of the card into the next hole. Stitch in this fashion all the way around the card.

Tie the ending tail and the beginning tail in a loose knot to secure them after you finish sewing the lace-up card.
