Open your word processor or desktop publishing software. Go to the "File" menu and choose "New," then browse the templates for an index card template. All of the major word processors and desktop publishing programs offer index card templates. Select a blank template or a template that includes text and graphics.
Edit your template. If you want to keep the template text and images you can. To delete the template however and add your own clip art, click on the template text to select it and hit "delete" on your keyboard.
Customize your index card with text. Place your cursor at the location on your index card template where you want to add text. Type a heading. Use the Font drop-down menu to select the font style and color. The heading or phrase can be anything you like. "My Notes" or a saying, such as "Keep a smile on your face" are examples.
Insert a personal image on your index card. Go to the Insert menu and choose a picture. Browse to the location on your computer where the image you want is located. Click the image to place it on your index card, then click to place a frame around the image. Use this frame to size the image and drag it where you want to place it on your card.
Save your image and select "Print" from the File menu. Place card stock in your printer. Your template will print between two and four index cards per page, depending on the template. If you have purchased perforated card stock, tear the index cards on the perforations. If there are no perforations, cut your index cards with scissors.
