How to Use Index Cards to Manage Notes

Index cards can be used for many projects and lessons. Children and adults can use index cards to learn new vocabulary words and memorize geographical locations. Index cards can also aid in the film production process, as filmmakers can draw images that will be shot in the film, and place them in a desired sequence. Students can use cards to manage class notes, breaking the cards into sections, permitting them to identify the important parts of a lesson or topic.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the index cards on a hard flat surface individually. Be sure that the surface is clean to prevent contaminating the index card with food or dirt.

    • 2

Divide the index cards into sections using a ruler and pencil. Draw a line down the center of each index card to create two sections, or draw two lines, an inch apart, down each index card to create three sections. These sections can be created on both the front and back of the index card.

    • 3

Trace over the lines with black felt-tip marker to make the sections visible. Write the main points, vocabulary words or other important note information taken from lessons or a meeting in each section of the index cards. Using a highlighter to highlight important words or main objectives of each section to identify them during the review process.

    • 4

Glue or tape paper images and photos to the back of the index cards that have not been broken up into sections. This will provide a visual tool to help the child or adult memorize the important notes that need to be remembered.
