How to Format Index Cards

Index cards are used for many purposes in business, government and education. Students and instructors alike employ note cards for research papers or books. If you would like to use index cards for the purpose of organizing your notes, you will need to approach the process in a highly organized way, making sure you format them in the proper way. This also means that you will want to create two different sets of cards.

Instructions

    • 1

Organize your sources by creating bibliography cards. You will want the usual biographical information (in a format like MLA), such as the name of the author and the name of the work. Include the library shelf number and the format of the item, such as book, video or audio tape. Complete cards for each work by a single author.

    • 2

Create note cards based on information garnered from the sources in your bibliography cards. These notes can contain items like quotes, paraphrases or your own comments regarding the material. Try to limit the scope of each card to a particular topic within the overall project. Cards that range too widely are of little use. The point is to create manageable bites that can be later merged into a paper or book.

    • 3

Add a keyword or nickname for a particular source to all the note cards that contain information covered by that source.

    • 4

Organize your note cards and create an outline for your project.
