How to Make Pharmacological Index Cards

Pharmacology is the study of the origin of drugs, their chemical compositions, the method in which they are metabolized by the body --- known as pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics --- and the effects they have on the body. Many drugs have several names and methods of action, as well as indications and contraindications. When studying for such a broad topic, you may become overwhelmed by the amount of information available. Index cards are a good way to organize that information.

Look up the information needed for the cards using a book or online reference. Dose, indications, contraindications and side effects are all necessary information when learning pharmacology. The Physician's Desk Reference is the commonly accepted standard pharmacological reference used by most health care professionals. Check Internet resources that can help you determine the needed information.

    • 2

Write a medication on one side of the card. Include the trade, generic and brand names of any drugs as you will need to know all of the names in a clinical setting.

    • 3

Write the information that relates to the medication on the other side of the card. Drug properties and pharmacological actions should be included in the information. Include indications, contraindications, side effects and dosing information.

    • 4

Create additional cards by writing sample test questions on one side of an index card. Sample questions can be found in textbooks, on the Internet or simply gleaned from lectures you have attended.

    • 5

Write the answers and any related additional information on the reverse side of the card.
