Adult Masonry Vocational Schools

For those interested in becoming a brick mason, the first step is to earn a high school diploma and consider on the job training in an apprenticeship or complete an associate's degree in masonry. Brick masons create structures from the stacking and arranging of bricks bound by mortar. Masonry education is often paired with tile-setting programs. Most states offer an associate's degree through the community college system. Apprenticeships are generally managed through local masonry unions. Each option requires a 1- to 2-year commitment to master the trade.

    Midwest: Dakota County Technical College

    • Masons have to know about many different parts of contrcution and usually serve as laborers before formal study.

      Located in Rosemount, Minnesota, the Dakota County Technical College offers a 67 credit Associates of Applied Science (AAS) or 33 credit diploma in Concrete and Masonry. The basic curriculum includes courses like shop theory, mortar and concrete testing, and blueprint reading.

    • Students must pass a state exam to earn an AAS in General Technology.
