Lake Washington Technical College, which has three campuses in Washington State (in Kirkland, Redwood and Duvall), offers training in machine technology. The college offers both full- and part-time classes for students with careers. The college provides training for an Associate of Applied Science degree, as well as specialized training for practicing professionals in the field on the widely used machine tooling computer program Mastercam. Training in machine technology at Lake Washington covers areas such as set-up and programming of computer numerical controls, the use of precision instruments, shop print reading and the creation of precision parts.

Los Angeles Trade-Tech College allows students to earn an Associate of Science degree or a certificate in the field of machine shop, with an emphasis on CNC. The associate degree requires that students take general education courses, while the certificate requires only that students take classes pertinent to machine shop. Both programs are designed with the full-time student in mind, with classes generally requiring 21 hours each week. An adjunct certificate is available for students who wish to take classes in the evening as well as professionals working in the field seeking new skills.

The Community College of Denver offers six associate of applied science and certificate programs for those wishing to become machinists. Associate degrees include programs in machine technologies management and CNC manufacturing. Students may pursue certificates in the fields of basic machining, intermediate machining, CNC machine tool operation and industrial maintenance. All courses in machining are taught at the Community College of Denver's campus in Auraria.

The Pennsylvania College of Technology is the vocational and technical school for Pennsylvania State University. The college offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in machine tool technology. Coursework begins with machine theory and operation, mechanical drawing, job routing, order of operations and mechanical drawing. The third semester emphasizes CNC operations and computer programming in manufacturing. Coursework also includes group technology (a production method where similar parts are designed and manufactured together), robotics and graphics as well as future directions in the field. Graduates of the Pennsylvania College of Technology are eligible to sit for the certification exam of the National Institute of Metalworking Skills.
