Alabama Ultrasound Schools

Ultrasound--otherwise known as sonography--uses high-frequency sound waves to construct visual images of organs, tissues or blood flow patterns based on the returning images the sound waves create. In Alabama, there is an ever-increasing demand for people trained in this field. Practitioners in ultrasound can work in many settings, including hospitals, health care clinics and private practice.
  1. Institute of Ultrasound Diagnostics

    • The Institute of Ultrasound Diagnostics offers week-long, three-week-long, three- month-long or one-year-long courses. The school can serve: 1) people who are looking for a career change and who are new to the health care field; or 2) people who are involved in the health care field but not in ultrasound techniques; or 3) people already involved in ultrasound who lack formal training or who want continuing education credits. The institute also offers a course of study in vascular technology for those cross-training in that area. In addition, the institute offers prerequisite courses in medical ethics, introduction to patient care, medical terminology and medical sociology.

Each student is exposed to classroom education as well as field training. The cardiac and vascular programs individually consist of 1,680 total clock hours of training and education (one-year program) while the combined course consists of 3,360 clock hours of training and education (two-year program). Graduates will be qualified to take the national credentialing exam. Students can apply for federal financial aid, and the institute offers tuition payment plans or loans for students in financial need.
