Be at least 16 years of age. If you are younger than 19, you must have withdrawn from school at least 90 days before applying and possess a letter from your school confirming your withdrawal. You are exempt from this condition if you are in a state correctional facility, a state agency child, enrolled in the job corps or enrolled in a GED program that has granted its approval for you to take the GED exam. If you are in a juvenile detention facility, you will be able to take the GED, provided you have the approval of the school superintendent, are at least one year behind your class and have a minimum stay of 30 days in the facility.
Take the official GED practice test. You will not be able to take the exam until you have completed the practice test. You can take it by contacting your local adult education center. A list of adult education centers is available at www.kyvae.org/countycontacts.aspx.
Complete a GED testing application form, which is available at adult education centers, as well as at www.kyae.ky.gov/students/ged.htm. You will need to provide your personal information, detail your eligibility to take the exam, and attach the letter confirming your withdrawal from school, if applicable. Note that the person who administered your practice test must complete the last section.
Register for the exam. You may do so through a GED testing center. Contact your local adult education center to find a testing center near you. On your exam date, bring your application, a photo ID and the testing fee of $50 (as of 2010).
Achieve a passing score. To get your GED in Kentucky, you must score no lower than 410 points on any test, with an average score of at least 450 for the complete exam.
