How to Get Your GED in Louisiana

The GED, or General Educational Development program, is an alternative option for students who can not or will not complete their high school education. In order to earn a GED, a person must take the GED exam, which is comprised of five tests in specialized subjects. These subjects are Language Arts: Reading, Language Arts: Writing, Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences. Adult education classes are available in Louisiana (and in some cases required of GED testers) to help prepare you for the exam.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain documentation from your high school proving that you have officially withdrawn from school.

    • 2

Contact your local adult education center to register for adult education classes. These classes are required for those under the age of 19 in order to qualify to take the GED. Adult education classes are free in Louisiana.

    • 3

Pass the Official Half-Length GED Practice Test. A Louisiana resident under the age of 19 will not be permitted to register for the GED until he has passed the practice test. If you are over the age of 19 you are not required to take the practice test.

    • 4

Register for the GED. You can find information regarding where to register and when tests are taking place at the official website of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.

    • 5

Show up to the Louisiana testing site on the day of the GED test with your DE 502 form (presented to you by your local adult education center to prove you are test-ready; this is not required for those aged 19 years and older), age waiver for students under age 16 (obtained through your local school system's superintendent), photograph baring proof of identification and a $50 test fee.

    • 6

Pass the GED test. Minimum requirements state that you must score at least a 410 on each of the five sub-tests and an average of 450 or higher on all five subjects to pass.

    • 7

Retake the test, or portions of the test, if necessary. If you are 18 years and younger you must return to Louisiana adult education classes and pass the Official Half-Length GED Practice Test once again before being permitted to retake. Those 19 and older must wait 30 days before re-registering.
