How to Get Your GED in Kansas

A GED is a valuable resource for someone who has not graduated from high school and will qualify him for jobs that require a high-school diploma. To earn a GED in Kansas, you must be at least 18 years old and be a resident of the state. In addition, you cannot be a high-school graduate and you must have been withdrawn from any high-school program for at least six months. To earn a GED you must pass a 7 1/2-hour test that covers an array of subjects, including writing, math, science and social studies.

      Register on the Kansas State Department of Education website (ksde.org) for a time and location to take the GED exam. The site lists 19 testing centers. For locations, search for "GED Testing Centers" on the site.

      To register on the phone, you can call 785-296-3201. You also can register in person at the Department of Education at 120 SE 10th Ave., Topeka. Over the phone a representative can tell you the testing center nearest to where you live. Some testing centers allow you to register in person at least a week before the test.

      Show up to the location where you registered on your test date, making sure you bring the $25 fee, photo ID and proof of address. You will also need to know your Social Security number.

      Take the test. You will learn your score and whether you passed in a few months. If you pass the GED, you will receive a certificate in the mail.
