How to Get Your GED in Arizona

The GED is composed of five separate tests designed to measure knowledge expected of high school graduates. Taking and passing the General Education Development test in Arizona requires preparation, study and a passing score of 410 on each test with a combined score of 2,250. The test is developed and administrated by the American Council on Education in partnership with state departments of education. In Arizona, you can take the GED test at one of 42 testing centers, according to ACE.

      Study for the GED in Arizona by signing up for classes with a local adult education center or for distance learning courses. The latter combines online instructions with email contact with an instructor and some face-to-face meetings, according to the Arizona Department of Education. You can also study at home through a series of video courses available through Eight, a public broadcasting station.

      Do several practice GED exams to prepare for the test. The GED covers five areas: mathematics, science, social studies, language arts-reading and language arts-writing. The entire test takes approximately seven hours to take, according to the Arizona Department of Education. Taking practice exams helps highlight the areas where you are weak and need more study.

      Learn test-taking strategies to help pass the exam, recommends the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center. Test-taking strategies include learning to eliminate incorrect answers, checking answers, reading directions carefully and answering easy questions first.

      Schedule your appointment to take the exam by contacting the Arizona Department of Education GED Testing Office and locating the nearest GED testing center. GED tests cannot be taken online. Pay any fees required for the test. According to ACE, in December 2010, Arizona charges from $65 to $90 for the entire battery of the GED test.

      Arrive early for the test and be prepared. Start the night before to prepare for the exam. Know the location of the center and how you are going to get there. Have your pencils ready and already sharpened. To take the exam, you need to have two forms of identification, according to the Arizona Department of Education. Also, 16- and 17-year-old test-takers need to have official withdrawal forms from their previous school and a notarized parental letter of permission.

      Watch the time during the test so you know when to move onto the next problem if you get stuck. Also, if you finish before time is called, spend the time proof-reading answers or reviewing questions.

      Be positive that you will pass, recommends VALRC. Reviewing or learning content to pass the GED is not a small undertaking. Once you have spent the time preparing for the exam, be positive you can pass.

      Check with GED123 24 hours after your test to see if you passed. Once you have passed the GED, you receive an Arizona High School Equivalency Diploma and a copy of the transcript of your test.
