How to Get a GED in Hawaii

Those without a high school diploma may find it difficult to obtain employment or pursue further schooling. Taking General Educational Development, or GED exam, is an alternative that can significantly expand your options. Hawaii offers multiple occasions to take this exam at 13 testing centers across the state. Before you register, take note of Hawaii's specific GED requirements.

      Make sure you are eligible to take the GED exam in Hawaii. You must not be enrolled in or have graduated from high school. In addition, you must be at least 18 years of age, or 16 years with a completed and approved "Exceptions to Compulsory Education, Form 4140" (see Resources). This form is proof that you have a valid reason for leaving high school.

      Take a GED preparation course. The State of Hawaii requires this of all people wishing to take the GED exam. You may take a preparation course through your local adult community school (see Resources).

      Register to take the GED exam at an approved Hawaii GED testing center (see Resources). This is the only way you can take the exam. The official GED is not available over the Internet.

      Pay the testing fee. As of 2010, the fee is $75 and is due in advance.

      Pass the GED exam. You will need to obtain a score of 410 on each of the five sections, with an average score of 450. Should you fail any part of the exam, you will be able to retake it. As of 2010, the retake fee is $15.
