Apply to take the GED exam at your local testing center. A list of contact information for testing centers can be found in the resources section.
Provide the testing center with your government issued ID card and U.S. Social Security Number or U.S. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. This will be used for identification verification. If you are below 18, you must provide evidence with school documents showing you have withdrawn from school.
Schedule a date with the testing center to take the GED exam.
Pay $50 to take the entire exam.
Study for the exam.The test consists of two parts of language arts (50 multiple choice questions and an essay section), two parts of mathematics, and a section of reading, social studies, and science.
Prepare for the exam by taking GED classes at your local adult education center. Visit bookstores to find preparation books specializing in GED test taking skills.
Take the exam at your testing location on your scheduled test day.
Wait for your scores. You will receive written notification about your results.
Decide further steps to take if you have failed all or some parts of the GED exam. Scores range from 200 (lowest) to 800 (highest). In order to pass, you must have a minimum score of 410 on each section and an average score of 450 on the entire test. If you fail a section or more, it is $10 to retake each section. However, you must wait at least six weeks before retaking the exam.
Pass the exam and you will receive your GED diploma.
