How to Get Your GED Online in Illinois

Adult residents of Illinois may obtain online instruction to prepare for the General Educational Development test through GED Illinois Online. GED-i is available through any adult education program that is funded by the Illinois Community College Board. Students have the option of using online GED-i instruction as a supplement to traditional classroom learning or may use it exclusively for their GED test preparation. In addition, the Illinois Department of Corrections offers GED-i to help inmates earn their GED.

      Visit the Illinois Provider Locator on the Internet to find GED-i instructions and other adult education programs available in your area of the state. You may also find programs by calling the Illinois Adult Learning Hotline at 1-800-321-9511.

      Enter your zip code in the online Illinois Provider Locator, and a listing of the adult education providers that offer GED-i in your area will appear. Contact information will be provided.

      Contact the provider of your choosing to set up an appointment for a free GED-i orientation.

      Attend the orientation, which will outline program requirements, the assistance that is available to online learners, expectations of the program and requirements necessary for success. The orientation is designed to help prospective students decide if online instruction is realistic for them, or whether they are better suited for traditional classroom instruction.

      Enroll in GED-i once you have decided that it is the solution for helping you successfully prepare to take the GED test.

      Participate in and complete online instruction and meet as advised with the online instructor assigned to you. The instructor will review your online work, provide support and offer guidance to help you prepare for the GED test. GED-i instruction is self paced. Students may complete online instruction at any time they have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Pre- and post-tests are offered to help students gauge their progress and readiness for the GED test.
