The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is intended for biological or adopted children of military personnel who have been killed in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001. To be eligible, students should be high school seniors or graduates planning on attending an accredited college or university. In order to apply, students must complete an application that includes sections about their financial standing as well as academic achievements and activities. Students must also attach a copy of their deceased parent’s birth certificate to be considered. The amount of the scholarship changes yearly, but recipients may reapply for the award.

Though not nationwide, there are a number of states that provide tuition waivers for adopted students and anyone who has spent time in the foster care system. Individual state vary on their requirements for eligibility, but that information can often be found on through the state’s health and family services or education departments. While many of the scholarships only apply to in-state colleges, the awards can often be for full tuition or upwards of $10,000.
Geared toward students who have spent time in the foster care system or were adopted, the Orphan Foundation of America scholarship program offers funds for their higher educational pursuits. To be considered for the scholarship, students must complete an online application as well as the supplemental materials that will be e-mail to you once the online form is submitted. In addition to these parts of the application, students must also provide one of the following types of documentation: verification of time in the foster care system, copies of parents’ death certificates, copy of legal guardianship papers or a copy of the adoption papers.
