Scholarships & Grants for Non-Traditional Students

A nontraditional student is generally one whose age or life circumstances aren't identified with the "typical" college student. She may be enrolling in college for the first time or returning later in life to complete her degree. Fortunately for these students, there are a number of scholarship and grant programs available to help them achieve their educational and career goals.
  1. University of Phoenix/AARP Foundation Scholarship

    • The AARP Foundation offers a scholarship program for adult and older students who plan to complete an undergraduate degree at the Universtiy of Phoenix. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must have been accepted to the university but not yet enrolled and also be of age to receive AARP benefits. The program provides a select number of full-tuition scholarships annually (25 at the time of writing), which are renewable for up to four years of study.

    Raise the Nation Foundation Scholarships and Grants

    • The Raise the Nation Foundation provides scholarships and grant awards to single mothers who plan to return to school to complete their degree or enroll for the first time. Grants are available to students who participate in volunteer service programs within their community. Scholarship awards are available to women who are already enrolled in undergraduate programs who have been unable to achieve other education funding. The number and amount of grants and scholarships awarded each year varies based on foundation funding and individual need.

    Scholarship Workshop Scholarship Programs

    • The Scholarship Workshop sponsors several scholarship programs for adult and nontraditional students who are either returning to college or enrolling for the first time. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $30,000 and you must meet individual eligibility requirements for each award. Several awards are designed specifically for adult women and students attending community or technical colleges.

    AAIA Displaced Homemaker Scholarship

    • The Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA) sponsors the Displaced Homemaker Scholarship for Native American men and women who have previously been unable to attend college due to responsibilities related to raising children. The program provides qualifying students with $1,500 per academic year and funds may be used for educational purposes or for expenses related to childcare.

    West Virginia HEAPS Grant Program

    • The Higher Education Adult Part-Time Student (HEAPS) Grant Program is designed for nontraditional West Virginia students who are pursuing degrees on a part-time basis. To qualify, students must be enrolled and making satisfactory progress at an approved West Virginia college or university. The program provides selected students with grants up to the full amount of tuition and individual awards are based on financial need.
