As of spring 2010, the American Red Cross made nurse assistant training available at its East Central Wisconsin Chapter in Waupaca as well as its Lakeland Chapter in Green Bay. Dates and times of training depend on location. The program takes a total of 120 hours to complete, which is divided into 88 hours of classroom instruction and 32 hours of clinical instruction. The course is meant to provide students with both information and skills needed to provide quality health care to clients in such areas as home health care, hospitals or various homes of nursing care. Class sizes are limited and acceptance into the program is on a first-come first-serve basis. As of 2010, the total cost of the program was $750, which includes textbooks and related materials. The Madison Area Technical College offers a nursing assistant program within its Downtown Education Center as well as Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg, Truax and Watertown campuses. This 120-hour course focuses on skills such as communication, patient rights and basic nursing, as well as personal care skills for a variety of clients including those with dementia. Students can register for the course during open registration each semester. The program offers courses each fall, winter and spring semester, and upon completion students will partake in the certification exam for the Wisconsin Department of Regulation & Licensing Nurses Aide Registry. Chippewa Valley Technical College offers a video-based nursing assistant program. This program requires a combined 120 hours of video-based instruction, simulated laboratory work as well as in-the-field clinical study. This course gives students the opportunity to work at their own pace, learning and developing such skills as collecting data, assisting in daily living activities, communication and ways to safeguard patients.
