Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses (RNs) who have earned a master's or doctorate degree in nursing, specializing in one of many nurse practitioner concentrations. The average master's degree program is two years in length with some programs taking longer to complete. Nurse practitioners perform a combination of primary care and nursing services.     • The University of Minnesota, School of Nursing is two hours and 25 minutes from Duluth. The Twin Cities campus of the school holds rank number 61 in tier-one national universities in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report "Best College" rankings. As of 2010, the university is in the process of phasing out the Master of Science in Nursing and transitioning into a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. Currently, there are two tracks of admission into the DNP program: post-master's entrance and BSN to DNP. The DNP offers nurse practitioner specialty areas in adult health/gerentological, adult health/women's health, family and pediatrics. Admission is competitive.

The school offers a Master of Arts in Nursing with nurse practitioner concentrations in neonatal, pediatric and adult gerontological. Applicants are required to have completed a bachelor's-level nursing program offered by an institution holding accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Students should also have a current nursing license and two years of clinical practice as a registered nurse.

    • Located in St. Paul, Metropolitan State University is a two-hour and 21-minute drive from Duluth. The school offers a Master of Science in Nursing with nurse practitioner concentrations in family and adult/geriatric. Both programs can be completed on either a three- or four-year track. Courses are offered in a combination of delivery formats including online, face-to-face and web-enhanced. Entrance into the programs is competitive, and applicants should hold a current unrestricted RN license.
