Premedical Studies Grants

Grants available to premedical students include those offered by specific colleges and universities, those funded by special interest organizations, and those tailored to minority groups underrepresented in medicine. Grants fund tuition and provide students with research experiences. Premedical students with qualifications for funding other than a premedical major, including membership in a special interest group, should apply for scholarships that consider those characteristics.
  1. The University of Virginia

    • The University of Virginia offers a scholarship for African-American premedical students.

The University of Virginia offers the Walter Ridley Pre-medical Scholarship to an African-American senior planning to attend medical school in the year following graduation. The scholarship amount is $1,000 to be used toward the costs of application fees and interviews for the student's medical school applications. The successful student will already have taken the MCAT--the Medical College Admission Test. The completed application includes a complete application form and supporting documents, including two essays, a transcript and a letter of recommendation. The application considers the student's grade point average, highest recorded MCAT score, activities and major, in addition to the supporting documents.

    Starfleet and Starfleet Academy (SFA)

    • The Starfleet Space Explorers' Memorial Scholarship honors Mercury, Challenger and Columbia astronauts.

Starfleet, the international association of "Star Trek" fans, offers scholarships categorized by the causes the "Star Trek" actors choose to support. The scholarship of interest to premedical students is the DeForest Kelley/Dr. Leonard McCoy Medical Scholarship for students studying subjects related to health care, including those pursuing premedical studies. Premedical students may also want to apply for the Space Explorers' Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship applicable to any field of study. The Memorial Scholarship honors astronauts from the Mercury, Challenger and Columbia space exploration missions. Eligible applicants will have been Starfleet members for at least a year at the time of application. Scholarship amounts are $500, but depend on the number of individuals applying and on the available funds for scholarships.

    Parkinson's Disease Foundation

    • The Parkinson's Disease Foundation funds premedical student research into Parkinson's Disease.

The Parkinson's Disease Foundation offers summer student fellowships for undergraduates well into their undergraduate careers, medical students and graduate students to carry out research related to investigating the causes of and identifying treatments for Parkinson's disease. Students receive mentoring and supervision from an expert Parkinson's scientist over the course of the 10-week period of laboratory research. The fellowships award $3,000 grants for the research period. Applications must include a completed application form, a written description of the proposed project, a transcript, a recommendation letter from the mentor and a letter from the applicant expressing her qualifications to conduct the research and how that research relates to her ultimate career objectives.

    The University of Southern Mississippi

    • The University of Southern Mississippi offers premedical grants in the form of scholarships.

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Science and Technology (CoST) offers scholarships to premedical students enrolled in that college. Scholarships include the Dr. Kenneth and Regina Williams Premed Scholarship and the Thad and Gerry Waites Health Professions Scholarship. The Waites Scholarship targets a new freshman of the College of Science and Technology who is graduating from Wayne County High School. Any CoST student may apply for this scholarship, but applications from premedical students receive preference. The Williams Scholarship is geared towards premedical students and affords preference to minority students and underclassmen, especially freshmen. If no qualified freshmen apply, then upperclassmen are considered in increasing order of year in school.
