Colleges in Wisconsin that have surgical technologist programs help prepare students for a career as a scrub, surgical technologist or operating room technician. Surgical technologists assist in surgeries by setting up instruments, assembling medical equipment and handing instruments to surgeons. Although surgical technologists are not required to be licensed, technologists may choose to obtain voluntary certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT.)

    • Milwaukee Area Technical College offers associate degrees in surgical technology. The school is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The program starts in January and August of each year, and although there is not a wait list, students are selected by a petition process. Surgical technologist students will learn about aseptic techniques, human anatomy and surgical procedures. Admission requirements include a high school diploma or GED, official high school transcripts and a passing score on the admission test. Financial aid is available to qualified students.

    Western Technical College

    • Western Technical College offers a technical diploma for graduates of the surgical technology program. The surgical technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The program is three semesters in length and a maximum of 22 students are accepted in the program each year. Students will take courses in microbiology, allied health communication, medical terminology and surgical procedures. Admission requirements include a high school diploma or GED, acceptable scores from the COMPASS, ASSET or ACT, background check, completed immunization record, CPR certification, knowledge of first aid and baseline eye exam. Additionally, prospective students must have taken high school chemistry, college chemistry or developmental chemistry as well as high school biology or developmental biology and passed with a grade of "C" or better. Students may receive financial aid through the U.S. Department of Education.

    Nicolet College

    • Nicolet College offers a technical diploma in surgical technology at their campus in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. The school is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and the surgical technology program consists of 39 credits. Graduates can expect to develop desirable employee traits such as the ability to function as a first scrub in certain surgical procedures, operate as a second scrub in all surgeries, ability to perform all duties assigned by a registered nurse and effectively maintain equipment, instruments and supplies. To be accepted in the surgical technology program at Nicolet College, applicants must have two semesters of high school chemistry or one semester of college chemistry, acceptable ACT scores, satisfactory medical records, a physical, clear background check, proof of CPR certification and completed job shadow experience with a local agency. Financial aid is available to students who are eligible.
