Oakland Community College is Michigan's largest community college, with more than 30,000 enrolled students. Students pursuing a career as a surgical technologist receive an Associate of Applied Science degree after completing the two-year program. Courses include pharmacology for the surgical technologist, biomedical technology and three clinical practicums, which require students to work in a real surgical environment. Additional supporting classes in computer literacy, composition and medical law are required.

Students at Macomb Community College can earn an Associate of Applied Science to become a surgical technologist. An advisory committee of members from the local health care community oversees the program and students. The select program, which accepts only 24 students per year, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Detroit's Wayne County Community College District offers three surgical technology tracks: an Associate of Applied Science degree, a certificate in Central Service Technology and a certificate as First Assistant. The certified first assistant has additional training to perform more tasks in the operating room, including controlling blood flow to prevent hemorrhaging.
