Technical Colleges in Georgia That Offer a Surgical Technology Degree

Surgical technologists are involved in most aspects of surgery. They set up instruments, get patients to operating rooms, pass instruments to surgeons and may run diagnostic equipment. Becoming a surgical tech means two years of higher education, typically at a technical college. The Technical College System of Georgia maintains current information on all technical institutions in the state and what they offer. Some of the schools offering surgical tech degrees in Georgia are Lanier, Columbus, Okefenokee and Savannah technical colleges.
  1. Lanier Technical College

    • Lanier Technical College has five campuses in north Georgia, but only the campus in Oakwood offers a degree in surgical technology. The program which takes eight quarter terms to complete. To be accepted, students must apply to the college, submit high school transcripts or GED scores, and either submit SAT or ACT scores or take a college-placement test. Students must complete some general education courses such as English, sociology, algebra and public speaking. Courses required for the degree include medical terminology, microbiology, patient care and surgical procedures. Graduates receive an associate of applied science degree.

    Columbus Technical College

    • Columbus Technical College offers an associate of applied science degree in surgical technology. To enter the program students must submit high school transcripts, GED scores, have a physical exam, be immunized, submit personal data and letter-of-intent forms. After being accepted, students must pass a background check to continue in the program. Surgical technology takes eight quarters to complete and includes general education classes in English, humanities and physical and social sciences. Core coursework includes surgical patient care, specialty practicum and surgical pharmacology.

    Okefenokee Technical College

    • Okefenokee Technical College has two campuses and offers surgical technology at its main campus in Waycross. The program can be completed in seven or eight quarters and graduates receive an associate of applied science degree. Class work begins in general education in areas such as psychology, math and literature. In addition to surgical technology, patient care and procedures, the core coursework includes anatomy and physiology, medical terms, microbiology and microcomputers. To be admitted to the program students must apply to the college, submit high school transcripts or GED scores, and submit ACT or SAT scores or take a placement test.

    Savannah Technical College

    • Savannah Technical College has five campuses and offers a surgical tech program at its main campus in Savannah. The two-year program leads to an associate of applied science degree and includes general courses such as fine arts, social behavior and natural sciences. Degree courses include chemistry, computers and surgical technology, procedures, specialties and practicum. Students interested in the program need to apply for college acceptance, submit high school and/or college transcripts or their GED scores, submit college entrance exam scores or take the college's placement exam, and complete a college orientation session.
