Colleges That Offer an Associate Degree for Park Rangers

Park rangers maintain and protect park areas, including forests, trails and campgrounds. They help offer educational programs and keep park visitors safe by patrolling trails and camping areas, making sure fire and safety rules are obeyed. Requirements to become a park ranger include being physically fit to handle long hours working and hiking outdoors. A bachelor's degree in forestry, environmental science or biology is recommended or required. However, an associate degree is a step toward becoming a park ranger.

    • Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, offers associate's degrees in biology, parks and recreation management, forest resources, and conservation and environmental science. Formally called Broward Community College, the school has been providing educationally opportunities since 1960, including associate's and bachelor's degrees. Tuition at Broward is $69.50 per credit hour for 2011 through 2013 for residents; nonresidents also pay $69.50 per credit hour plus a $209.60 nonresident fee.

    Red Rocks Community College

    • Red Rocks Community College is located in Lakewood and Arvada, Colorado. Founded in 1969, the college offers 150 programs and 650 courses to 14,000 students each year. The Lakewood campus offers a certificate in park ranger technology, which can be integrated with an associate's degree, preparing students to transfer and complete bachelor's degrees. Tuition during the 2010 to 2011 school year for Colorado residents is $158.25 per credit hour; nonresident tuition is $413.60 per credit hour.

    • Spokane Community College in eastern Washington offers a variety of two-year programs that prepare students to go directly into a career or transfer to a four-year college. The campus includes a student-managed floral shop, bakery, automotive repair and cosmetology center, allowing students to learn with hands-on training. Students preparing for a career as a park ranger can opt for an associate degree in biological science pre-major or natural resource management. Tuition for the 2010 to 2011 school year were $86.62 per credit hour for residents, $116.92 for nonresidents.

    Vermilion Community College

    • Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minnesota, serves about 700 students. The school's focus on the natural word is reflected in courses offered in natural resources and outdoor leadership. Students preparing for a career as a park ranger can enroll in the wildland/wildlife law enforcement program, fisheries and wildlife management or natural resource technology, which has a forestry/wildlife option. The cost of tuition during the 2010 to 2011 school year is $162.49 per credit hour for residents of Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Manitoba. It is $186.61 for South Dakota residents, and $201.97 per credit hour for all others.
