In order to apply for a midwifery degree, you must first complete a degree which allows you to become a registered nurse. At CUNY, the following colleges offer degrees in Registered Nurse Training: Lehman College in the Bronx; Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn; Borough of Manhattan Community College; Bronx Community College; Queensborough Community College in Bayside; LaGuardia Community College in Long Island; College of Staten Island; York College in Jamaica; Hostos Community College in the Bronx; New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn; Hunter College in Manhattan and Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. All of these schools offer a bachelor's or associate's degree in this area, or both.
At CUNY, a midwifery degree is only offered as a master's at Hunter College located in Manhattan, New York. The major is called Maternal Health and Neonatal Nursing. This degree also covers child health and basic nursing.
The Maternal Health and Neonatal Nursing master's degree at Hunter College prepares registered nurses to care for pregnant women, as well as new mothers and their newborns. Topics covered include perinatal and newborn health assessment instruction, prenatal care, stabilization, pathophysiology of pregnancy, fetuses, caring for newborns, clinical management of high-risk pregnancies and complications, perinatal and neonatal technology, clinical procedures and patient education. The course work includes health assessments, the effects of disease, high-risk pregnancies, use of technology and approaching patients.
When applying, be sure to choose the Master of Science in Nursing- Maternal-Child Nursing degree. Obtain an application from the Hunter College registrar either online or in person. You must show proof of your RN status, such as a license or college degree when applying.
