Located in New York City, New York University's bachelor's degree program in nursing has some of the highest standards in the state. Along with meeting the standard university admissions standards, which require SAT scores and grades in the 75th percentile, nursing school applicants must certify that they meet the highest social, intellectual and physical standards in a written contract (see Resources). Freshmen can expect a 120-credit curriculum including 44 liberal arts credits, 20 prerequisites and 64 credits related specifically to nursing. A unique attribute of NYU's program is their dual degree offering, in which students can obtain a master's degree and a bachelor's degree simultaneously.
With thirty locations throughout the state and a robust online program, Empire State College is readily accessible to students. Admissions requirements include an associate degree or diploma in nursing with a 3.0 GPA, an active nursing license and an ability to complete college level work as demonstrated by a transcript and recommendations. The registered nurse to bachelor of science in nursing, or R.N. to B.S. in nursing, degree program can be completed part time, on a two-year track or on a three-year track. It moves at an accelerated pace through the fall, spring and summer semesters and includes courses in health care delivery, nursing research and advanced clinical experience. Columbia University is located in New York City. The School of Nursing offers a combined BS/MS (bachelor of science/master of science) ETP (entry to practice) program that draws from four schools within the university: medicine, oral surgery, public health and nursing. Admissions standards are tight. The ETP program is an accelerated nursing program for non-nurse college graduates who are interested in a career as a professional advanced practice nurse. Academic studies are closely integrated with clinical experience.
The SUNY Downstate Medical Center is located in Brooklyn, New York. Its college of nursing offers a 15-month accelerated bachelor's degree in nursing. Entry requirements include a bachelor's degree in another subject, a GPA of at least 3.0 and two letters of recommendation. Coursework includes contemporary issues in health care, the research process and clinical leadership and management.
