The Teachers College at Columbia University (tc.columbia.edu) offers more than 120 study programs including: elementary and secondary inclusive education; intellectual disability and autism education; private school leadership; and psychology in education. Students have the option to pursue a concentration, where they focus on an area of interest. For the 2011 academic year, there are six areas of concentration including: law and educational institutes; family and community education; conflict resolution; and interdisciplinary studies in education. Students have access to research and service centers and computing and information services; a health service is available to students living on campus.
Teaching House New York (teachinghouse.com) trains students to gain their certificate in English language teaching to adults, allowing them to teach in colleges and training centers worldwide. Trainee teachers are taught in classes of no more than six other pupils and learn how to structure a lesson plans; how to teach grammar vocabulary; and how to use teaching materials. On completion of the course, trainees will have gained practical experience, having spent up to six hours teaching their own class.
Bank Street Graduate School of Education (bankstreet.edu) allows students to develop skills needed to teach in schools and education establishments including hospitals and museums. The school offers graduate degree programs and requires that prospective students have an undergraduate degree; this does not have to be in education. Academic programs consist of education-related master's degree programs; first certification master's degree programs; and leadership master's degree programs. Students studying for their first certification can specialize in bilingual language and education while also learning museum and special education programs.
Students studying at City University Hunter School of Education (hunter.cuny.edu) can choose between two undergraduate education programs and 13 graduate programs. The quality urban elementary school teacher undergraduate program teaches students skills needed to become teachers of grade one through six. Its duration is six semesters, with transfer students who have 40 credits or more having the option to study over four semesters. The adolescent education program teaches students the skills needed to teach students grades seven through 12. Six areas of specialism are taught, including: drama, English and social studies. Graduate programs offered include: counseling, special education and adolescent literacy.
The State University of New York (suny.edu) has 17 campuses in New York State, offering student teacher orientations and seminars on how to become education professionals. Students attend teaching seminars that teach them how to educate diverse classes and provide a caring and productive education for their students. Each semester begins with teacher orientation where students are educated on teaching in New York City schools. Students also work as student teachers, alongside their studies, enabling them to put their skills into practice and learn more through practical experience.
