Colleges for a Spanish Education Degree

Spanish education students master the Spanish language, read Spanish language books and learn how to teach the language to others. While studying for a Spanish education degree at a college or university, students study education topics such as foreign language teaching methods or educational psychology. A Spanish education student can choose a concentration, such as South American literature, so that she can teach language and a specific subject at the high school or college level.
  1. Cornell University

    • Cornell University's Spanish department offers undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D.-level courses for Spanish education. While Spanish majors usually choose a second major, such as Psychology or International Relations, students complete graduate work in Spanish, such as studies on Chilean or Brazilian politics; teach in secondary schools; or enter into a government position translating Spanish.

    University of Texas at Austin

    • The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin offers Spanish education degrees. In the Spanish major, students select one concentration: either language teaching, Hispanic linguistics, Hispanic literature or Hispanic studies. All Spanish majors take grammar, writing, Hispanic linguistics, literature and civilization, but for Spanish language teaching majors, more concentration is put on grammar and linguistics. At the end of the undergraduate program, students can receive a "Teacher Certification in Spanish." This partners with the UTeach-Liberal Arts certification program, which prepares students to teach early childhood to 12th-grade learners.

    Asbury University

    • At Asbury University, located in Wilmore, Kentucky, the Spanish department offers advanced topics in Spanish. Students work with a faculty member in Spanish to choose an educational preparation program. Students also choose an advanced independent research project in Spanish--such as in literature or culture--that will help them develop skills to teach preschool through 12th-grade-level Spanish.

    UCLA

    • The department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California in Los Angeles offers a Master of Arts degree in Spanish for aspiring college-level Spanish educators. To enroll in the program, students must already have earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish from a recognized university or have experience in the Spanish language field. A student who chooses the linguistics concentration takes one upper division or graduate course in literature and 10 elective courses to earn a degree. Linguistics courses include Spanish syntax, Spanish phonetics and morphology, and Spanish diachronic and synchronic language variation. The Spanish degree prepares students to teach Spanish language and/or literature at upper-level colleges and universities.
