Maternity nursing courses teach about women's health and reproductive health. Students will learn how to care for patients who are pregnant and postpartum, as well as how to care for women with complicated or high-risk pregnancies. The course will also focus on fetal development, maternal nutrition, pain relief during labor and delivery and family adaptation to childbirth.
Mental health nursing teach students about how to care for and assess patients with mental health issues, since this type of patient will require a different type of care than other patients. The course will also teach how nurses can help to create treatment plans, both psychotherapeutic and pharmacological.
Nursing pharmacology is an important nursing course where students learn about medications and drugs that are used to care for patients. Drug classifications, effects of certain drugs and how to administer drugs are taught as well.
Nursing leadership and management teaches how to develop leadership skills since nurses will often be supervising other medical staff members. Students will learn how to balance their work, delegate responsibilities to others and come up with resolutions to any problems that may arise.
In a surgical nursing course, students learn about the management of patients to assist them in becoming well after a surgery. Students will learn about treatments for respiratory, renal disorders and neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Other subjects covered may include nursing during a disaster, hazards in the home, leadership and community resources.
