Community Colleges That Offer Degrees for Surgical Technicians

Surgical technicians assist surgeons and nurses in the operating room. Surgical technicians, also known as surgical technologists, must pass an exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting before they can begin work. Prior to taking the exam, academic requirements must be met. Many community colleges in the United States offer programs for surgical technicians that prepare students to take the exam.
  1. Blue Ridge Community College

    • Located in Flat Rock, North Carolina, Blue Ridge Community College offers two programs for surgical technology. One is the diploma program and the other is the associate of applied science degree. The diploma program takes one year to complete over a fall, spring and summer semester. The applied science degree takes five semesters over a two-year period, including one summer semester.

    • Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming, offers a program in surgical technology both on campus or online for any resident in the state of Wyoming. The program's lecture courses are delivered online. Arrangements are made for online students to receive the laboratory training on weekends. All students, whether in residence or online, must receive clinical practical experience at hospitals in the state of Wyoming. That will require travel outside of Laramie County or the student's home county, and may require overnight stays.

    Springfield Technical Community College

    • Springfield Technical Community College, located in Springfield, Massachusetts, offers an sssociate of science in surgical technology degree. According to the school's website, scheduling for clinical experience in the operating room begins at 6:45 a.m. with the possibility of an afternoon shift. This notice is to inform prospective students of scheduling outside the normal times of classes.

    Iowa Lakes Community College

    • Iowa Lakes Community College offers its surgical technology program at the campus in Spencer, Iowa. Both a one-year diploma and a two-year associate's degree is available for students. Either program prepares students for employment in a surgical setting. Laboratory work takes place in a mock operating room, while real experience is earned in a hospital setting.
