The University of Kansas, located in Lawrence, offers bachelor's, master's and doctorate programs in music therapy. Students typically take about eight semesters to complete the program and enter a six-month internship giving them hands-on experience in music therapy. The faculty is comprised of individuals with experience working with people with developmental disabilities, Alzheimer's, behavioral/emotional disorders and more.

Located in Northridge, California State University Northridge offers a bachelor's degree program in music therapy. Students get to work in the Music Therapy Wellness Clinic where they can receive hands-on experience working with individuals who might benefit from music therapy. Coursework in CSUN's program includes: functional skills for music therapy, psychology of music, influence of music on behavior and more. Upon completion of the program and a six-month internship, students are eligible for a career in music therapy
