Colleges That Offer Degrees in Medieval History

A degree in medieval history immerses the student in the culture and events of the Middle Ages, a period extending from the decline of the Roman Empire in the 4th century to the dawn of the Renaissance in the 15th century. Students who specialize in medieval history or medieval studies go on to pursue teaching and research in this area. Several colleges and universities in the U.S. offer degrees in medieval history, often with an interdisciplinary flavor that includes coursework in other academic fields.
  1. Cornell University

    • The graduate program in medieval studies at Cornell offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Middle Ages. Coursework combines medieval history with studies in medieval languages, literature, philosophy and archaeology to give students a full understanding of medieval societies and cultures. The program at Cornell began in 1968 and enrolls 12 to 16 graduate students a year.

    • UCLA offers a program in medieval history leading to a Ph.D. It does not offer a master's as a terminal degree. Students with either a bachelor's or master's degree can apply to enter the medieval history doctoral program. Applicants should have at least two years of university study in Latin. UCLA's medieval history program uses an interdisciplinary approach in which students immerse themselves not only in medieval history but also in the languages and literature of the era. Students study medieval Latin and take courses in philosophy, art history, anthropology and other subjects.
