The University of Illinois at Chicago has several informatics programs related to the health care industry. These include health informatics, health care IT, medical informatics, health information management, nursing and pharmacy informatics. The university offers an on line Master of Science in Health Informatics degree that requires completion of 45 credit hours. The degree has both research and a non-research tracks. Courses required by both tracks include health care data, ethics and legal issues, health care information systems, social and organizational issues and health care IT and vendor management. The research track requires additional courses in strategic inquiry, along with seminars in biomedical and health information sciences.

Northeastern University's Master of Science In Health Informatics degree lets students pursue their studies either on line or at Northeastern's Boston campus. The interdisciplinary program requires completion of 39 credit hours. Besides introduction to health informatics and health information systems, courses include project management, the American health care system, the business of health care informatics, public health and informatics, data management and database design, as well as security and access.
Northeastern also offers an advanced Master of Science in Health Informatics. The program is primarily for doctors and nurses or others with strong backgrounds in the medical field. Students in other disciplines at Northeastern, for example, engineering and public health, may study health informatics as a sub-specialty.

A third option for a master's in health informatics is the University of California at Davis. Its program is 43 credit hours and culminates in a Master of Science in Health Informatics degree. The program is research-oriented and requires both a research project and a master's thesis. Mandatory courses include introduction to health informatics, clinical data acquisition and analysis, computer-based patient records and seminars on health informatics research. Students can choose from a number of elective courses like database and knowledge management, principles of environmental health, spatial epidemiology, health systems and administration, human diseases and conditions, telemedicine and medical decision support.
