The University of North Texas offers a health informatics program that leads to a Master of Science degree upon successful completion. The courses in this program are offered in three formats; students may opt to complete all courses online, all courses on campus or a mixture of both formats. Courses include introduction to information professionals, introduction to information organization and introduction to information access and retrieval. Other courses include health sciences information management, medical informatics and medical digital imaging.

The University of Illinois at Chicago has a public health informatics program that leads to either a certificate of completion or a Master of Science degree; both options are completed in an online format. The certificate can be completed in as little as three semesters and requires the completion of five courses. These courses include health information and decision supports systems; web-based public health information systems; data mining applications in public health; geographic information systems applications in public health; and development of public health surveillance information systems. The master's degree program has two options; the comprehensive option takes three years to complete while the professional enhancement program takes two years. Courses include public health concepts and practices, principles of epidemiology and health information and decision support systems.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has a health informatics program that leads to the completion of a Master of Science degree. This program is designed to be completed in six semesters over the course of two years by allowing students to complete two courses per semester. As of July 2010, the full-time option is not available. The courses are delivered entirely online and students are only required to visit the campus twice per year for the four-day residential requirements which include weekend days. Courses include introduction to health informatics and health care delivery, communications and network, organizational behavior and leadership and health care information resources management.
