In 2008, Duke University began offering its Integrative Health Coach Professional Training Program. According to a Duke press release, Duke was the first academic medical center to introduce such a research-based program. Training is offered at the Duke Integrative Medicine facility in Durham, N.C. The program includes 16 days of training, broken into four modules of 25-30 hours of classroom learning. Those who complete the program receive a certificate of completion and may earn continuing education credits. The program is approved by the International Coach Federation. The training covers topics such as the science of behavior change, personalized health planning, nutrition and stress management. Participants also will develop their own personalized health plan and practice coaching other participants.

The National Society of Health Coaches offers a self-paced certification program for health care workers called Health Coaching Made Easy for Healthcare Providers. The program includes a manual and an audio CD which offers disease-specific role plays. The certification exam is offered online. Continuing education credits are available. Physicians and other credentialed professionals who complete the course can become certified health coaches, while non-credentialed workers receive a certificate of completion. The program covers managing vs. coaching, active listening, setting goals and giving effective feedback.

B1 Community, based in Cape Cod, Mass., offers health coach training and certification for health care providers that is grounded in yoga and the nexus of body, mind and spirit. During the phone-based training, students work with a partner and must integrate yoga, meditation, breath work or movement into their studies. The curriculum covers positive choice-making, self-awareness, karma, chakras and physiology. Students work with a partner. To obtain certification, students must complete two modules of training: the eight-week B1 Health Coach Training Basics, and the six-month B1 Health Coach Training Fundamentals. Students also must receive 10 hours of professional health coaching and show documentation of having been paid to provide coaching for at least 20 hours or having been employed as a health coach for three months, and must pass an evaluation. For the B1 Senior Health Coach Certification, students also must complete the B1 Health Coach Training Mastery course, which is offered in person, and participate in a B1 training session as a mentor.
