If you lack this type background, UC Davis recommends that you take the Introduction to U.S. Health care course offered at UC San Diego Extension. Certification requires completion of five required courses, including Introduction to Health Informatics, Health Information Systems Analysis and Design, Electronic Health Records, The Internet and the Future of Patient Care and Managing Systems Level Change. Students also choose one elective. Requirements include passing all courses with a grade of C or better. All courses completed for this certificate program can count toward the UC Davis Health Informatics Masters degree.

The University of Illinois at Chicago has an online certification program that consists of five courses and one required paper to be completed within five years. To be considered for admission, you’ll need to have completed at least a bachelor's degree. Submission of transcripts, a personal statement and a CV are also required. Courses include Health Information and Decision Support Systems, Development of Public Health Surveillance Information Systems, Web-Based Public Health Information Systems, Geographic Information System Applications in Public Health and Data Mining Applications in Public Health. All course work can be used towards a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
