Degree to Become a Psychologist

A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Psychology or a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree is required to practice as a licensed psychologist. Psychologists with these degrees can specialize in different areas, including health, school and child psychology.
  1. Length

    • Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs usually take between four and seven years to complete. Degrees in specialty areas take longer to complete.

    Courses

    • Ph.D. and Psy.D. students take courses in core psychology and experimental methods. Students also take courses in their specialty areas.

    Dissertation & Clinical Work

    • Ph.D. students complete a dissertation at the end of their degree programs. Psy.D. students complete hands-on clinical work before completing their programs.
