The University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) offers several different programs of study in the health informatics field, including nursing informatics. The University of California at Davis offers a Master's in Health Informatics that can be pursued by health care professionals in a variety of fields, including nursing. The program is a 43-credit hour course of study that requires 15 hours of core courses, 19 hours of electives and an additional nine hours in informatics research. The University of Minnesota's School of Nursing offers a 15-credit hour certificate as a post-baccalaureate program of study. Students are required to take these courses at the master's degree level, and most of the courses are offered in a web-based format with only two or three required sessions on campus each year. The school also offers tuition support which can be up to $10,000 in aid for qualified students as of 2011. Courses of study include: Applied Health Care Databases, Interdisciplinary Healthcare Informatics, Consumer Health Informatics, System Analysis and Design, Knowledge Representation and Interoperability, Population Health Informatics and Clinical Support Decisions.
The University of Pittsburgh offers a 15-credit hour post-master's certificate in nursing informatics. The program of study can be completed in just four academic terms, making it possible to complete the program in just a little over a year if summer terms are taken. A master's degree is a required prerequisite for admission as is a current registered nurse's license. Coursework includes Introduction to Health Informatics, Information Technology Project Management, Clinical Information Systems and two practicums.
