As part of the Texas Medical Center---a medical network primarily consisting of of hospitals and schools---the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston has five nursing tracks. In addition to the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and the master of science in nursing (MSN) degrees are the doctor of philosophy in nursing for those who want to focus on research and the doctor in nursing practice for aspiring nursing scholars. The post-master's program is for MSN degree holders who want to specialize in certain areas of nursing such as acute care, gerontology, pediatrics and oncology.

Founded in 1918, the nursing department of this historically black university has eight programs to choose from. Four of these are bachelor degrees: the regular bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), two programs for licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and registered nurses (RNs), and a pre-nursing degree. The other four are master's programs: the regular master of science in nursing (MSN) track, plus graduate degrees for family nurse practitioners, nursing administrators and nursing educators.

The Coleman College for Health Sciences, one of the departments that constitutes Houston Community College, has two nursing programs. The one-year LPN track requires 39 credits for completion; it consists of five credits for pre-requisites (nutrition, and anatomy and physiology) and 34 credits focusing on core nursing areas such as medication administration, pediatrics and nursing leadership. The two-year RN program is a 67-credit track that includes a pre-admission stage of 13 credits for subjects such as psychology and English composition.
