Houston Community College offers a licensed vocational nursing program at the two-year college system's Coleman College campus, which is located in the Texas Medical Center, a sprawling business district in the city that consists of hospitals, clinics and medical schools. Students who complete the program are awarded a vocational nursing certificate of completion. Students must still take the NCLEX-PN exam to become a licensed Texas vocational nurse. The vocational nursing program at Houston Community College takes one year to complete and requires a full-time course load. To be accepted into the program, students must attend an information session, submit a completed application with an official high school transcript, pass a criminal background check and undergo and pass a series of drug screenings and Hepatitis B vaccines. Once accepted into the program, students are required to attend orientation before classes start. Students are also required to pass the following courses before being accepted into the program: nutrition, anatomy and physiology for allied health and introduction to health professions. The program's pharmacology course is offered at Houston Community College's Coleman and Katy campuses.

Lone Star College's north Harris County campus in north Houston has a vocational nursing certificate program that lasts one year and requires a minimum of 47 credit hours. Upon completing the program, studies are prepared to take the NCLEX-PN exam. The vocational nursing certificate program is also offered at Lone Star College's nearby Cypress-Fairbanks, Kingwood, Montgomery and Tomball campuses. Students who participate in the program are taught nursing under the instruction of seasoned and highly educated nursing professionals, according to the two-year community college's website. The program also exposes students to laboratories where they get hands-on instruction on nursing procedures. To be accepted into the vocational nursing program at Lone Star College, students must pass a series of criminal background checks, drug screenings and illness screenings. Students must also be accepted as a student to the community college and pass a physical exam.

San Jacinto College's two Houston locations, which are located in the eastern and southern portions of the city, have vocational nursing programs. Students who graduate from the program are awarded a vocational nursing certificate of technology. The Texas Board of Nursing does not award students a vocational nursing license to practice in the state until they receive a passing grade on the NCLEX-PN exam. The two-year community college's vocational nursing program requires students to complete a minimum of 42 credit hours. The program lasts three semesters. To be accepted to San Jacinto College's vocational nursing program, students must be a high school graduate or have received a passing grade on a GED test, have a minimum 2.25 GPA in college core courses and pass a physical exam.
