Licensed Vocational Colleges

Vocational schools provide hands-on training in a career or skill set that employers need immediately. A vocational school may focus on one program of training or multiple programs. Licensed vocational schools have been accredited by a vocational accreditation agency to provide education in a specific job category. Prospective students should verify the school's accreditation agency with the U.S. Department of Education to ensure quality and value.
  1. Culinary School

    • Culinary schools train students in the art of cooking, managing restaurants and serving customers. Courses are designed to prepare culinary students for employment as sous chefs, bakers and sommeliers. The Culinary Institute of America has locations in New York, San Antonio and Napa Valley. The school has a reputation as the world's premier culinary college. Culinary Institute LeNotre is founded on the reputation of French master pastry chef Gaston LeNotre. Associate's degrees in culinary arts and baking and pastry are offered, along with a cadre of diploma options, including sous chef de patisserie or de cuisine.

    Beauty School

    • Students who wish to learn hairstyling may attend Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School at one of several locations. The program covers hair washing and cutting basics. Practice on volunteers and fellow students is required. Creativity is encouraged once the basics are acquired. Marinello Schools of Beauty offer cosmetology and aesthetics. Aesthetic program includes courses on nutrition, skin treatments and massage therapy.

    Medical Technology

    • Medical technology programs include sonography, radiography technician and nuclear medicine technology. Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers certification programs in each of these fields to individuals interested in wishing to enter the medical field. The programs last from 12 to 21 months. Hands-on learning is taught in the hospital or at a partner hospital. Dade Medical College offers programs in diagnostic medical ultrasound and cardiac sonography. Certificates in phlebotomy and electrocardiography are also offered.

    Paralegal Studies

    • Paralegals help attorneys prepare legal documents, conduct research and respond to clients. Capital University Law School trains paralegals for immediate employment in a law firm or corporate legal department. A 14-week intensive summer program is also available. The Center for Advanced Legal Studies offers courses in law and ethics, legal research and writing, civil procedure and family law. A certificate is granted after completion of the program. Career placement is also available.
