For full-time students, the licensed vocational nursing program can be completed in 1 year, with classes beginning in both the fall and spring semesters. For admission, you need to submit a completed application, along with your high school transcript or GED scores. You also will need to have taken the Nurse Entrance Test in the past 3 years, with reading and math scores of a least 75 percent. Criminal background checks and drug screenings are required of successful applicants before admission to the licensed vocational training program is finalized.

    Lone Star College System

    • Long Star College System offers a three-semester vocational nursing training program, as well as a bridge degree program for present vocational nurses to become certified as registered nurses. The licensed vocational nursing coursework can be completed in 1 year and includes the prerequisite biology course in anatomy and physiology, as well as nutrition, basic clinical nursing skills, pharmacology, pediatric nursing, gerontology and maternity/newborn nursing.     San Jacinto College

    • Application to San Jacinto College's licensed vocational nursing program must be made in person at either the school's North or South Campus. You should provide high school transcripts or GED scores and complete the college's admissions test with minimum scores of 7 in math, reading and writing. If you have done previous college coursework, you also must bring any applicable transcripts and have attained a GPA of at least 2.5. Once accepted into the three-semester, year-long program, you will receive training in nutrition, essentials of medical administration, anatomy and physiology for allied health, advanced nursing skills, pharmacology, gerontology, mental illness/mental health, pediatrics and maternal/neonatal nursing. On completion of the coursework, you will be prepared to take the NCLEX-PN certification exam, the fee of which is included in your tuition.
