    • The Master of Science in technical communication from North Carolina State University is the first program of its kind in the United States. Areas of study include rhetoric of science and technology, theory and research in professional writing, publication management for technical communicators, usability studies, online information design, science writing, crisis communication, computer graphics, advanced typographical systems and critical discourse analysis.

      No specific undergraduate major is required. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The program requires Graduate Record Exam scores, a writing sample, resume and three letters of recommendation.

    University of Illinois at Chicago

    • Earn a Master of Fine Arts in graphic design degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Course work includes drawing, industrial design, sculpture, motion graphics, methods and techniques of analog photography, electronic visualization, graphic design, interactive product design and documentary media. All students must complete a thesis project before graduation. The university requires students to have a laptop and a variety of art-related software, determined by the class.

      Admission to the MFA program requires a bachelor's degree in any field. Applicants must have a graphic design portfolio and an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. The university also requires three letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a portfolio of 12 to 15 work examples. Besides graphic design, the University of Illinois has MFA programs in electronic visualization, industrial design, photography and studio arts.

    Towson University

    • The Towson University Master of Fine Arts in theatre program immerses students in courses such as production dramaturgy, advanced costume design studio, integrated voice and movement, self-empowerment in theatre, text construction, theatre systems, sound application and technology, theatre prosthetics and graduate directing. All students must complete a research paper and a possible project or performance, or both. Students can to try out for Towson's revolving schedule of performances.

      Applicants must have a bachelor's degree (any field) with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students with a GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 may be admitted conditionally. The university requires a professional resume, artistic statement, three letters of reference, three additional reference contacts and video/DVD performances. Towson also has an MFA program in studio art.
