Students just beginning their careers in respiratory therapy may be interested in the Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy degree program offered by the California College of San Diego. The program, which takes just under two years to complete, offers coursework in adult pathophysiology, general anatomy and physiology, pulmonary rehabilitation, mechanical ventilation, introduction to respiratory therapy, infection control, lung expansion therapy, aerosol and humidity therapy, airway management and electrocadiography. Students wishing to take their education further may enroll in the school’s Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy program. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.

The Pima Medical Institute offers an associate degree program in respiratory therapy, lasting approximately 21 months. The program is available at Pima’s locations in New Mexico, Arizona, Washington, California, Colorado and Nevada, and includes topics in science for respiratory care, cardiac anatomy and physiology, cardiopulmonary diagnostics, respiratory therapeutics, management and communication, critical care techniques, patient assessment, respiratory perinatology, advanced mechanical ventilation, advanced pharmacology and advanced pulmonary diagnostics. Applicants require a high school diploma or GED; an entrance exam is also required for all students without any college experience.

The Borough of Manhattan Community College, part of The City University of New York, offers an associate’s degree in respiratory therapy. The two-year program includes courses in fundamentals of respiratory therapy, respiratory physiology, pulmonary function testing, pharmacology, fundamentals of clinical medicine, anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of chemistry, general psychology and introduction to respiratory therapy equipment. Students also take general classes such as English composition and mathematics for respiratory therapy. A high school diploma or GED is required.
