The bachelor of music in music therapy program at the University of the Pacific prepares graduates to become certified music therapists. Students take core music courses and also complete general education requirements. Fieldwork is available in community agencies working with children, adults and seniors. Students spend six months in clinical training in accordance with American Music Therapy Association guidelines prior to taking the certification examination.

The undergraduate program in music therapy at the University of Evansville provides students with practicum experience from the first year of study. After taking core courses in the psychology of music, music theory and music history and participating in field placement, students are prepared to complete the required six-month internship and take the music therapy certification exam. Since the program's inception in 1975, some 170 graduates have gone on to careers in nursing homes, in schools, and in private practice.

Music therapy majors at Berklee College of Music study music theory and history, instruments including guitar and keyboard and clinical skills as part of the bachelor's degree curriculum. Upon the completion of course work, students perform an internship in preparation for taking the certification exam. Students learn to develop music therapy plans for children, seniors, and adults with psychiatric or medical disorders as part of the internship experience. In addition, music therapy majors learn about the ethical codes associated with the discipline and put those codes into practice during the internship.

The master's degree in music therapy at Illinois State University is the only graduate level degree in music therapy offered in the state. It can be completed by students who did not major in the discipline as undergraduates, so long as they meet core music course requirements. Graduation from the master's program prepares students to obtain positions at the supervisory level and provides advanced musical training by way of coursework in music, research methodology and music therapy theory.
