New York University has a Master of Arts degree program in music psychotherapy that is available for students to pursue on a part-time or full-time basis. In order to gain admission into the program, students must first audition/interview for admittance. This program splits into three stages---the first stage provides students with the opportunity to complete and strengthen their entry-level competencies. During the second stage, students will enter into the advanced specialization portion of the program, and during the third stage, students develop their own treatment approach within their clinical specialization. Students will take courses that include advanced therapy and methods, theory and application of improvisation in music therapy, applied psychology and drama therapy.

Western Michigan University offers a music therapy program that trains students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This program is one of the first of its kind in the nation to receive accreditation. Students work with three music therapists in this program and will have the opportunity to apply the skills they have learned in eight clinical affiliations. Students in this program will take courses that include music convocation, aural comprehension, introduction to music therapy and general psychology. Students will also take music therapy courses that include abnormal psychology, therapy methods and materials, keyboard harmonization and influence of music on behavior.

The University of Louisville has a music therapy program that teaches students how to use music and musical activities to help accomplish goals in therapy to improve, maintain or restore physical and mental health. Students who pursue this program will earn a Bachelor of Music degree upon completion of the program. Students in this program will take music therapy courses that include music theory, introduction to music study, introduction to music therapy and music therapy techniques. Students will also take courses that include psychology of music, principles and practices of music therapy, introduction to research in music therapy and clinical music therapy applications.
