The nation's top college programs for educators can be found throughout the country, not only in schools that are dedicated solely to education, but also in those that have made it one particular specialty among their many university programs. Attending the education program of one of these schools is a good first step towards a successful career as a teacher or professor.
  1. Vanderbilt University

    • Vanderbilt University, located in Nashville, Tennessee, enrolls 6,900 undergraduate and 5,800 graduate students as of the 2010 to 2011 academic year. Vanderbilt's Peabody College specializes in Education and Human Development and serves 1,200 undergraduate and 680 graduate students. Peabody's education programs are the top rated by U.S. News, and offer courses in teaching specific age groups from kindergarten through secondary school. Undergraduate education majors are required to take a second major so as to have a teaching specialty and to increase their career possibilities after college.

    • Columbia University is an Ivy League school located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. As of 2010, Columbia enrolled 7,900 undergraduates and nearly 20,000 more students in its graduate, professional and medical schools. Columbia's Teacher's College is a graduate school specializing in a wide variety of educational fields. In addition to the school's Curriculum and Teaching Program, other departments provide specialized education on teaching in such diverse subjects as mathematics, psychology, social analysis, and art history.

    • Harvard University is an Ivy League school located in Cambridge, Massachussetts. As of 2009, Harvard enrolled 6,600 undergraduate students, as well as another 15,000 in its various graduate and professional programs. According to the same statistics, Harvard's Graduate School of Education enrolled 900 students. The graduate school offers 13 master's degree programs and two doctoral degree programs in education, one of which, the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), has six possible concentrations.     • Stanford University, located in Palo Alto, California, is ranked No. 5 overall in U.S. News and World Report's university listings. As of 2011, Stanford enrolled 6,900 undergraduate and 8,700 graduate students. Stanford University's School of Education offers master's and doctoral degrees on the graduate level, as well as an honors and minors programs for undergraduates that supplements their chosen major. Stanford's nine master's degrees are one-year programs designed to link educational theory and practice. The doctoral programs include an in-depth analysis of educational policy and practice, a study of psychology as applied to education, and a curriculum studies and teacher education program that addresses teaching in specific fields such as history, math and English.
