Online Degrees in Communication Disorders

A communication disorder is a delay or disorder in communication skills. This can occur in articulation (production of speech sounds), receptive or expressive language, fluency, voice, or hearing. Those suffering from such disorders are generally treated by a speech-language pathologist who holds a degree in communication disorders. Many colleges and universities offer programs --- typically awarding a master's degree --- in communication disorders; there are several online options. Most programs require some time on campus, and an internship. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certifies speech pathologists, and students should check with the organization to ensure that their chosen program is accredited.

    Considerations

    • Prospective students should note that, while online programs offer flexibility, obtaining a degree in communication disorders, and the certification and licenses often required to practice, involves work in real-world settings. Obtaining certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, for example, requires clinical practice supervised by a certified speech-language pathologist. ASHA certification is generally required to practice in a medical facility, nursing home, or clinical setting, and some states have their own licensure requirements.
