The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis offers an online doctoral degree. Students in the discipline of nursing have the opportunity to pursue the PhD. The program is offered as part of a collaborative program offered in conjunction with the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The program emphasizes three primary research areas: chronic care, acute care and health promotion. Within these three broad rubrics, the program emphasizes clinical nursing research, social, economic, legal and political aspects of the nursing profession and health care policies; and testing and developing models and theories of nursing care. The program is offered mainly in an online format, but students do work closely with a faculty adviser whose research interests are closely aligned with those of the student.

As part of its nursing program, Vanderbilt University also offers an online degree in the nursing field. Vanderbilt's online program leads to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. The program requires students to take 74 credit hours of course material. Of these, 39 hours may be transferred in from a previous master's degree program, cutting down on the amount of time needed to obtain the degree. Areas of study covered by the program include nursing informatics, statistics in health science, evidence-based practice, epidemiology, health care economics and finance, quality improvement and patient safety, management of organizations and systems, legal and ethical issues and health policy. Vanderbilt's nursing program is one of the best in the nation. In 2007, it was ranked as a top-20 program by "U.S. News & World Report" at No. 19.

Argosy University in Nashville, Tennessee, offers business students an opportunity to pursue a doctorate degree in business administration (DBA). Argosy is a regionally accredited university that received its accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Similar to a PhD, the Argosy DBA degree is research-oriented, emphasizing applied research from experience gained in the business field.
