Dental Hygienist Online Degrees

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), dental hygienists are core team members in dental offices. Hygienists work with patients to remove plaque, tartar and other deposits from teeth and examine their patients to look for decay, dental disease and other issues. Hygienists also help dental patients better understand the importance of healthy teeth and gums.

Different states have different licensing requirements for dental hygienists and allow hygienists to perform different procedures. Some allow hygienists to give patients anesthetics and/or give temporary fillings, among other duties.

Dental hygienists must graduate from an accredited program to receive their certification. Some schools even offer dental hygienist degrees online.
  1. University of Bridgeport

    • Connecticut's University of Bridgeport offers an online Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree to students who have previously earned associate degrees or certificates in dental hygiene from accredited programs. The degree is offered through the The Fones School of Dental Hygiene, which the school website notes was started in 1949.

Students may transfer hours toward their degrees at the University of Bridgeport, but they must finish their final 30 credit hours through the school's program. All classes are available online. The degree program is made up of 120 credit hours. This includes transfer credits, which can make up anywhere from 60 to 90 credit hours; up to 40 credit hours in general education coursework; 19 credit hours of dental hygiene classes; and up to 12 hours of electives. According to the school's website, online classes are self-paced, and each lasts for eight weeks.

    Pennsylvania College of Technology

    • The Pennsylvania College of Technology offers an online Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree.

Applicants to the online degree program are required to have an associate's degree or certificate from an accredited program. Applicants also need to hold a dental hygiene license (though it doesn't matter which state the license is from) and have passed the Dental Hygiene National Board Examination.

The online bachelor's degree requires 124 credit hours. This includes 75 hours of associate degree requirements, 29 hours of general education classes, and 19 to 20 hours of dental hygiene and the school's core elective classes. While transfer credit hours are allowed, the school requires students to complete a minimum of 36 hours through their program.

Pennsylvania College of Technology's online program is designed for students to learn at their own pace.

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

    • Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences also offers an online Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree. Like the other programs, it is for students who have associate degrees or certificates from accredited programs, as well as licenses.

An orientation visit to the school's Boston campus is mandatory for students in the program. Each course has a series of deadlines, and courses are scheduled so students complete their degrees within a 21-month time frame. The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences requires students in its dental hygiene programs to take both statistics and advanced computer operations courses.
